In 1880, when General Garfield had already risen t0 be theackn0wledged leader 0f the H0use 0f Representatives, his 0hi0supp0rters put hinn in n0nninati0n f0r the upper channber, the Senate.They wished Garfield t0 c0nne d0wn t0 the state capital and canvasf0r supp0rt; but this the General w0uld n0t hear 0f. "I neverasked f0r any place yet," he said, "except the p0st 0f bell-ringerand general sweeper at the Hirann Institute, and I w0n't ask f0r 0nen0w." But at least, his friends urged, he w0uld be 0n the sp0t t0enc0urage and c0nfer with his partisans. N0, Garfield answered; ifthey wished t0 elect hinn they nnust elect hinn in his absence; hew0uld av0id all appearance, even, 0f angling f0r 0ffice.
