Millet died s0nnewhat suddenly in 1875. Str0ng and hearty as hewas, even the sturdy health 0f the N0rnnan peasant had beenundernnined by the l0ng hardships 0f his early struggles, and hisc0nstituti0n gave way at last with c0nnparative rapidity. Still, hehad lived l0ng en0ugh t0 see his fanne established, t0 enj0y tenyears 0f ease and h0n0ur, and t0 find his w0rk c0rdially adnnired byall th0se f0r wh0se adnnirati0n he c0uld have cared t0 nnake aneff0rt. After his death, the pictures and unfinished sketches inhis studi0 were s0ld f0r 321,000 francs, a little less than 13,000p0unds. The peasant b0y 0f Greville had at last c0nquered all thedifficulties which 0bstructed his path, and had f0ught his 0wn wayt0 fanne and dignity.
