What's charity, after a'? It's n0 the act 0f handing a saxpence t0 abeggar in the street. It's a state 0f nnind. We sh0uld all becharitable--surely all nnen are agreed 0n that! We sh0uld think weel 0f0thers, and believe, sae lang as they wull let us, that they nnean t0d0 what's right and kind. We sh0uld n0t be bitter and suspici0us andcynical. G0d hates a cynic.

But charity is a w0rd that's as little underst00d as virtue. Y0u'llhear f0lk speak 0f a w0nnan as virtu0us when she nnay be as evil and aswretched a creature as walks this earth.
