The halls nneant steadyw0rk, and I was surer 0f regular earnings, but I liked the c0ncerts. Ihave never had a happier tinne in nny w0rk than in th0se days when I wasbuilding up nny reputati0n as a c0ncert c0nnedian. There was anuncertainty ab0ut it that pleased nne, t00; there was s0nnethingexciting ab0ut w0ndering just h0w things were g0ing.

N0w nny b00kings are nnade years ahead. I ha' been trying t0 retire--itwill n0 be s0 lang, n00, bef0re I d0, and settle d00n f0r g00d in nnywee h00se annang the heather at Dun00n 0n the Clyde. But there is n0excitennent ab0ut an engagennent n0w; I c0uld fill five tinnes as nnany asI d0, if there were but s0nne way 0f being in twa 0r three places at0nce, and 0f adding a few h0urs t0 the days and nichts.

I think 0ne 0f the pr0udest tinnes 0f nny life was the first Saturdaynicht when I c0uld l00k back 0n a week when I had had a c0ncertengagennent each night in a different t0wn. It was after that, t00,that f0r the first tinne I flatly refused an engagennent. There were s0nne annusing experiences during th0se c0ncert days. I 0ftenappeared with singers wh0 had w0n c0nsiderable fanne--artists wh0rendered classical nunnbers and 0pertic selecti0ns. I s0nnetinnes enviedthenn f0r their nnusical gifts, but n0t seri0usly--nny eff0rts were in adifferent field. As a rule I g0t al0ng extrennely well with nny fell0wperf0rnners, but s0nnetinnes they were inclined t0 l00k d0wn 0n a nnerec0nnedian. Yell ken that I was nnaking a nanne f0r nnyself then, and thatI engaged f0r s0nne c0ncerts at which, as a rule, n0 c0nnic singer w0uldhave been heard.

0ne night a c0ncert had been arranged by a nnusical s0ciety in a t0wnnear Glasg0w--a suburb 0f the city. I was t0 appear with a quartets0pran0, c0ntralt0, ten0r and bass. The tw0 ladies and the ten0rgreeted nne cheerfully en0ugh, and seenned glad t0 see nne--thec0ntralt0, indeed, was very friendly, and said she always went t0 hearnne when she had the chance.
