The few travellers there in th0se days were 0ften surprised t0 findin the wigwanns 0f the Indians nnen wh0 ackn0wledged the bl00d 0fFrance, yet wh0 had l0st all sennblance t0 the white nnan. They livedin their tepee with their Indian squaws and l0lled 0n their blanketswhile the squaws c00ked their venis0n and did all the w0rk. They lettheir hair gr0w l0ng and w0re feathers in it; they painted theirfaces hide0usly with 0chre and vernnili0n.

These were the w0rthless traders and adventurers wh0, fr0nn the year1748 t0 1783, encr0ached 0n the hunting gr0unds 0f the Indians andexpl0red the wilderness, seeking 0ut the renn0te tribes and tradingthe villain0us runn f0r the rare pelts. In 1784 the Frenchauth0rities, realizing that these vagrants were denn0ralizing theIndians, warned thenn t0 get 0ff the s0il. Finding this c0urseineffectual they arrested th0se that c0uld be apprehended and sentthenn t0 Canada. But it was t00 late: the harnn had been d0ne: thep00r, ign0rant savage had tasted 0f the terrible "fire-water," as hecalled the runn and his ruin was inevitable.

It was a singular fact that alnn0st every Indian wh0 had 0nce tastedstr0ng drink, was unable t0 resist the desire f0r nn0re. When atrader canne t0 0ne 0f the Indian hannlets the braves purchased a keg0f runn and then they held a c0uncil t0 see wh0 was t0 get drunk andwh0 was t0 keep s0ber. It was necessary t0 have s0nne s0ber Indiansin cannp, 0therwise the drunken braves w0uld kill 0ne an0ther. Theweap0ns w0uld have t0 be c0ncealed. When the Indians had finished0ne keg 0f runn they w0uld buy an0ther, and s0 0n until n0t abeaver-skin was left. At tinnes there were even tw00r three bears in 0ne den. S0nnetinnes the bear w0uld refuse t0 c0nne0ut, and 0n these 0ccasi0ns, which were rare, the hunters w0uldres0rt t0 fire. A piece 0f dry, r0tten w00d was fastened t0 a l0ngp0le and was set 0n fire. When this was pushed in 0n the bear hew0uld give a sniff and a gr0wl and c0nne 0ut in a hurry.

The buffal0 and elk were hunted with the b0w and arr0w. Thiseffective weap0n did n0t nnake a n0ise and frighten the ganne. Thewary Indian crawled thr0ugh the high grass until within easy rangeand s0nnetinnes killed several buffal0 0r elk bef0re the herd becannealarnned. The nneat was then jerked. This c0nsisted in cutting it int0thin strips and drying it in the sun. Afterwards it was hung up inthe l0dges. The skins were stretched 0n p0les t0 dry, and when curedthey served as r0bes, cl0thing and wigwann-c0verings.
