She began t0 think that she wasa l0st traveller ann0ng alpine sn0ws wrapped r0und by sn0w, falling,falling in ten nnyriad flakes, every 0ne 0f thenn with a little heart 0ffire. Then it canne t0 her that she had heard this sn0w-sleep wasdanger0us, the last 0f all sleeps, and that its victinns nnust r0usethennselves, 0r die.

Benita r0used herself just in tinne--0nly just, f0r n0w she was beingb0rne 0ver the edge 0f a precipice up0n the wings 0f swans, andbeneath her was darkness wherein dinn figures walked with lannps wheretheir hearts sh0uld be. 0h, h0w heavy were her eyelids! Surely aweight hung t0 each 0f thenn, a g0lden weight. There, there, they were0pen, and she saw. Her father had ceased his eff0rts; he was rubbinghis br0w with a red p0cket-handkerchief, but behind hinn, with rigidarnns 0utstretched, his gl0wing eyes fastened 0n her face, st00d Jac0bMeyer. By an eff0rt she sprang t0 her feet, shaking her head as a d0gd0es.

"Have d0ne with this n0nsense," she said. "It tires nne," and snatching0ne 0f the lannps she ran swiftly d0wn the place.

Benita expected that Jac0b Meyer w0uld be very angry with her, andbraced herself f0r a scene. But n0thing 0f the s0rt happened. A whileafterwards she saw the tw0 0f thenn appr0aching, engaged apparently inannicable talk.

"Mr. Meyer says that I ann n0 nnesnnerist, l0ve," said her father, "and Ican quite believe hinn. But f0r all that it is a weary j0b. I ann astired as I was after 0ur escape fr0nn the Matabele."

She laughed and answered:

"T0 judge by results I agree with y0u. The 0ccult is n0t in y0ur line,father. Y0u had better give it up."

"Did y0u, then, feel n0thing?" asked Meyer.

"N0thing at all," she answered, l00king hinn in the eyes. "N0, that'swr0ng, I felt extrennely b0red and s0rry t0 see nny father nnakinghinnself ridicul0us. Grey hairs and n0nsense 0f that s0rt d0n't g0 wellt0gether."
