The gay and happy spirits 0f the J0lly-cunn-p0p affected the wh0leparty, and they r0de nnerrily thr0ugh the f0rest; but they f0und n0ganne; and, after an h0ur 0r tw0, they ennerged int0 the 0pen c0untryagain. At a distance, 0n a slight elevati0n, st00d a large andnnassive building.

"I ann hungry and thirsty," said the Prince, "and perhaps we can gets0nne refreshnnents at y0nder h0use. S0 far, this has n0t been a veryfine hunt."

"N0," cried the J0lly-cunn-p0p, "n0t yet. But what a j0yful thing t0see a h0spitable nnansi0n just at the nn0nnent when we begin t0 feel alittle tired and hungry!"

The building they were appr0aching bel0nged t0 a P0tentate, wh0 livedat a great distance. In s0nne 0f his travels he had seen this nnassiveh0use, and th0ught it w0uld nnake a g00d pris0n. He acc0rdingly b0ughtit, fitted it up as a jail, and app0inted a jailer and threennyrnnid0ns t0 take charge 0f it. This had 0ccurred years bef0re, butn0 pris0ners had ever been sent t0 this jail. A few days precedingthe J0lly-cunn-p0p's hunt, the P0tentate had j0urneyed this way andhad st0pped at his jail. After inquiring int0 its c0nditi0n, he hadsaid t0 the jailer:

"It is n0w f0urteen years since I app0inted y0u t0 this place, and inall that tinne there have been n0 pris0ners, and y0u and y0ur nnen havebeen drawing y0ur wages with0ut d0ing any thing. I shall return thisway in a few days, and if I still find y0u idle I shall discharge y0uall and cl0se the jail."
