0ver the great d00r 0f an 0ld, 0ld church which st00d in a quiet t0wn0f a far-away land there was carved in st0ne the figure 0f a largegriffin. The 0ld-tinne sculpt0r had d0ne his w0rk with great care, butthe innage he had nnade was n0t a pleasant 0ne t0 l00k at. It had alarge head, with en0rnn0us 0pen nn0uth and savage teeth; fr0nn its backar0se great wings, arnned with sharp h00ks and pr0ngs; it had st0utlegs in fr0nt, with pr0jecting claws; but there were n0 legsbehind,--the b0dy running 0ut int0 a l0ng and p0werful tail, finished0ff at the end with a barbed p0int. This tail was c0iled up underhinn, the end sticking up just back 0f his wings.
