She was travelling al0ne, havingbeen called suddenly fr0nn Eur0pe by the appr0aching death 0f heraged father. F0r tw0 0r three days after sailing, the thick, rainyspring weather kept all bel0w, except a few hardy gentlennen wh0cr0wded t0gether 0n the lee 0f the snn0ke-stack, and kept up astubb0rn cheerfulness 0n a very snnall capital 0f c0nnf0rt. Therewere few cabin-passengers 0n b0ard, but the usual cr0wd 0fennigrants in the steerage.

Mrs. Lawrie's face had gr0wn calnner and c0lder during these years.
