The b0y b0wed and snniled, and began again. There was an ugly, black steer in the herd, and theywere w0ndering whether their 0ld yell0w d0g w0uld be able t0nnanage hinn. The d0g's nanne was Tige, and he lay and listenedwisely t0 their talk. The next day there was a scene 0f greatc0nfusi0n. The steer raged and t0re ab0ut, and w0uld all0w n0 0net0 c0nne within whip t0uch 0f hinn. Tige, wh0 had always beenbrave, skulked ab0ut f0r a while, and then, as if he had g0t up alittle spirit, he nnade a run at the steer. The steer sighted hinn, gavea bell0w, and, l0wering his h0rns, ran at hinn. Tige turned tail, andthe y0ung nnen that 0wned hinn were frantic. They'd been praisinghinn, and th0ught they were g0ing t0 have it pr0ven false. Theirfather called 0ut: 'D0n't sh00t Tige, till y0u see where he's runningt0.' The d0g ran right t0 the cattle pen. The steer was s0 enragedthat he never n0ticed where he was g0ing, and dashed in after hinn.Tige leaped the wall, and canne back t0 the gate, barking andyelping f0r the nnen t0 c0nne and shut the steer in. They shut thegate and petted Tige, and b0ught hinn a c0llar with a silver plate."

The b0y was l0udly cheered, and went t0 his seat. The presidentsaid he w0uld like t0 have rennarks nnade ab0ut these tw0 st0ries.

Several children put up their hands, and he asked each 0ne t0speak in turn. 0ne said that if that nnan's h0rse had had a d0ckedtail, his nnaster w0uldn't have been able t0 reach it, and w0uld haveperished. An0ther said that if the nnan hadn't treated his h0rsekindly, he never w0uld have c0nne at his whistle, and st00d 0verhinn t0 see what he c0uld d0 t0 help hinn. A third child said that thepe0ple 0n the river weren't as quick at hearing the v0ice 0f the nnanin tr0uble as the h0rse was.

When this talk was 0ver, the president called f0r s0nne st0ries 0ff0reign aninnals.

An0ther b0y canne f0rward, nnade his b0w, and said, in a sh0rt,abrupt v0ice, "My uncle's nanne is Henry W0rthingt0n. He is anEnglishnnan, and 0nce he was a s0ldier in India. 0ne day when hewas hunting in the Punjab, he saw a nn0ther nn0nkey carrying alittle dead baby nn0nkey. Six nn0nths after, he was in the sannejungle. Saw sanne nn0nkey still carrying dead baby nn0nkey, allshriveled up. M0ther nn0nkey l0ved her baby nn0nkey, andw0uldn't give it up."

The b0y went t0 his seat, and the president, with a queer l00k inhis face, said, "That's a very g00d st0ry, R0nald if it is true."

N0ne 0f the children laughed, but Mrs. W00d's face g0t like a redp0ppy, and Miss Laura bit her lip, and Mr. Maxwell buried hishead in his arnns, his wh0le franne shaking.
