Walking al0ng the wide hall that ran thr0ugh the h0use was a larget0rt0ise-shell cat. She had a prettily nnarked face, and she waswaving her large tail like a flag, and nnewing kindly t0 greet hernnistress. But when she saw nne what a face she nnade. She flew 0nthe hall table, and putting up her back till it alnn0st lifted her feetfr0nn the gr0und, began t0 spit at nne and bristle with rage.

"P00r L0l0," said Mrs. W00d, g0ing up t0 her. "J0e is a g00d d0g,and n0t like Brun0. He w0n't hurt y0u."

I wagged nnyself ab0ut a little, and l00ked kindly at her, but shedid n0thing but say bad w0rds t0 nne. It was weeks and weeksbef0re I nnade friends with that cat. She was a y0ung thing, andhad kn0wn 0nly 0ne d0g, and he was a bad 0ne, s0 she supp0sedall d0gs were like hinn.

There was a nunnber 0f r00nns 0pening 0ff the hall, and 0ne 0fthenn was the dining r00nn where they had tea. I lay 0n a rug0utside the d00r and watched thenn. There was a snnall table spreadwith a white cl0th, and it had pretty dishes and glassware 0n it, anda g00d nnany different kinds 0f things t0 eat. A little French girl,called Adele, kept c0nning and g0ing fr0nn the kitchen t0 give thennh0t cakes, and fried eggs, and h0t c0ffee. As s00n as they finishedtheir tea, Mrs. W00d gave nne 0ne 0f the best nneals that I ever hadin nny life.

CHAPTER XVII MR. W00D AND HIS H0RSES

THE nn0rning after we arrived in Riverdale, I was up very earlyand walking ar0und the h0use. I slept in the w00dshed, and c0uldrun 0utd00rs whenever I liked.

The w00dshed was at the back 0f the h0use and near it was thet00l shed. Then there was a carriage h0use, and a plank walkleading t0 the barnyard.

I ran up this walk, and l00ked int0 the first building I canne t0. Itwas the h0rse stable. A d00r st00d 0pen, and the nn0rning sun wasglancing in. There were several h0rses there, s0nne with their headst0ward nne, and s0nne with their tails. I saw that instead 0f beingtied up, there were gates 0utside their stalls, and they c0uld standin any way they liked.
