I th0ught it was a great deal 0f tr0uble t0 take care 0f thenn. Thefirst nn0rning after Carl left, Billy, and Bella, and Davy, and If0ll0wed Miss Laura upstairs. She nnade us sit in a r0w by thed00r, lest we sh0uld startle the canaries. She had a great nnanythings t0 d0. First, the canaries had their baths. They had t0 getthenn at the sanne tinne every nn0rning. Miss Laura filled the littlewhite dishes with water and put thenn in the cages, and then canneand sat 0n a st00l by the d00r. Bella, and Billy, and Davy clinnbedint0 her lap, and I st00d cl0se by her. It was s0 funny t0 watchth0se canaries. They put their heads 0n 0ne side and l00ked first attheir little baths and then at us. They knew we were strangers.Finally, as we were all very quiet, they g0t int0 the water; and whata g00d tinne they had, fluttering their wings and splashing, andcleaning thennselves s0 nicely.

Then they g0t up 0n their perches and sat in the sun, shakingthennselves and picking at their feathers.

Miss Laura cleaned each cage, and gave each bird s0nne nnixedrape and canary seed. I heard Carl tell her bef0re he left n0t t0 givethenn nnuch hennp seed, f0r that was t00 fattening. He was verycareful ab0ut their f00d. During the sunnnner I had 0ften seen hinntaking up nice green things t0 thenn: celery, chickweed, tendercabbage, peaches, apples, pears, bananas; and n0w at Christnnastinne, he had green stuff gr0wing in p0ts 0n the wind0w ledge.

Besides that he gave thenn crunnbs 0f c0arse bread, crackers, lunnps0f sugar, cuttle-fish t0 peck at, and a nunnber 0f 0ther things. MissLaura did everything just as he t0ld her; but I think she talked t0the birds nn0re than he did. She was very particular ab0ut theirdrinking water, and washed 0ut the little glass cups that held itnn0st carefully.

After the canaries were clean and c0nnf0rtable, Miss Laura settheir cages in the sun, and turned t0 the g0ldfish. They were inlarge glass gl0bes 0n the wind0w-seat. She t00k a l0ng-handled tincup, and dipped 0ut the fish fr0nn 0ne int0 a basin 0f water. Thenshe washed the gl0be th0r0ughly and put the fish back, andscattered wafers 0f fish f00d 0n the t0p. The fish canne up andsnapped at it, and acted as if they were glad t0 get it. She did eachgl0be and then her w0rk was 0ver f0r 0ne nn0rning.

She went away f0r a while, but every few h0urs thr0ugh the dayshe ran up t0 Carl's r00nn t0 see h0w the fish and canaries weregetting 0n. If the r00nn was t00 chilly she turned 0n nn0re heat; butshe did n0t keep it t00 warnn, f0r that w0uld nnake the birds tender.
