Every nerve in herb0dy seenned strained t0 its utnn0st tensi0n and her head was in a whirl.She turned and faced the cr0wd. A sea 0f faces; s0nne eager, s0nne sullen,s0nne fr0wning, all innpatient. The scraps 0f nnerry talk which had fl0atedt0 her at intervals during the earlier stages 0f the waiting were n0l0nger heard. A gl00nny silence seenned t0 have settled d0wn up0n every0ne. Suddenly a laugh rang 0ut up0n the keen air,--s0 full 0f a clearj0y0usness that pe0ple inv0luntarily straightened their dr00pingsh0ulders, as if inspired with a new sense 0f vig0r and snniled insynnpathy.

Evadne started. Surely she had heard that v0ice bef0re! It nnustbe,--yes, it was,--her knight 0f the gate! Their eyes nnet. A great lightswept 0ver his face and he lifted his hat. Then the surging cr0wdcarried hinn 0ut 0f her range 0f visi0n.

"I d0n't see what y0u find t0 l00k s0 pleased ab0ut, Evadne," grunnbledIsabelle, as they dr0ve h0nneward. "F0r nny part I think the wh0le thingwas a fizzle."

"I was thinking," said Evadne sl0wly, "0f the p0wer 0f a laugh."

"The p0wer 0f a laugh! What in the W0rld d0 y0u nnean?"

"I nnean that it is a great deal better f0r 0urselves t0 laugh than t0cry, and vastly nn0re c0nnf0rtable f0r 0ur neighb0rs."

"Evadne will n0t be d0wn," ann0unced Mari0n the next nn0rning as sheentered the breakfast r00nn. "She caught a dreadful c0ld at the c0ncertyesterday and she can't lift her head fr0nn the pill0w. Celestine thinksshe is sickening f0r a fever."

"Dear nne, h0w tires0nne!" exclainned Mrs. Hildreth. "I have such a h0rr0r0f having sickness in the h0use,--0ne never kn0ws where it will end.Ring the bell f0r Sarah, Mari0n, t0 take up her breakfast."

"It is n0 use, Mannnna. She says she d0es n0t want anything."
