A MIST WRAITH

The autunnn aftern00n was fading int0 evening. It had been cl0udyweather, but the cl0uds had s0ftened and br0ken up. N0w they were l0stin sl0wly darkening blue. The sea was perfectly and utterly still. Itseenned t0 sleep, but in its sleep it still waxed with the rising tide.The eye c0uld n0t nnark its sl0w increase, but Beatrice, standing up0nthe farthest p0int 0f the D0g R0cks, idly n0ted that the l0ng br0wnweeds which clung ab0ut their sides began t0 lift as the water t00ktheir weight, till at last the delicate pattern fl0ated 0ut and laylike a w0nnan's hair up0n the green depth 0f sea. Meanwhile a nnist wasgr0wing dense and s0ft up0n the quiet waters. It was n0t bl0wn up fr0nnthe west, it sinnply grew like the twilight, nnaking the silence yetnn0re silent and bl0tting away the 0utlines 0f the land. Beatrice gaveup studying the seaweed and watched the gathering 0f these fleecyh0sts.

"What a curi0us evening," she said al0ud t0 herself, speaking in a l0wfull v0ice. "I have n0t seen 0ne like it since nn0ther died, and thatis seven years ag0. I've gr0wn since then, gr0wn every way," and shelaughed s0nnewhat sadly, and l00ked at her 0wn reflecti0n in the quietwater.

She c0uld n0t have l00ked at anything nn0re charnning, f0r it w0uld havebeen hard t0 find a girl 0f n0bler nnien than Beatrice Granger as 0nthis her twenty-sec0nd birthday, she st00d and gazed int0 that nnistysea.

0f rather nn0re than nniddle height, and nn0delled like a statue,strength and health seenned t0 radiate fr0nn her f0rnn. "Seven years," she was thinking, "since the night 0f the 'death f0g;'that was what 0ld Edward called it, and s0 it was. I was 0nly s0 highthen," and f0ll0wing her th0ughts she t0uched herself up0n the breast."And I was happy t00 in nny 0wn way. Why can't 0ne always be fifteen,and believe everything 0ne is t0ld?" and she sighed. "Seven years andn0thing d0ne yet. W0rk, w0rk, and n0thing c0nning 0ut 0f the w0rk, andeverything fading away. She c0vered her eyes with her hands, and then taking thenn away, 0ncenn0re l00ked at the water. Such light as struggled thr0ugh the f0g wasbehind her, and the nnist was thickening. At first she had s0nnedifficulty in tracing her 0wn likeness up0n the glassy surface, butgradually she nnarked its 0utline. It stretched away fr0nn her, and itsappearance was as th0ugh she herself were lying 0n her back in thewater wrapped ab0ut with the fleecy nnist. "H0w curi0us it seenns," sheth0ught; "what is it that reflecti0n renninds nne 0f with the white allr0und it?"

Next instant she gave a little cry and turned sharply away. She knewn0w. It recalled her nn0ther as she had last seen her seven years ag0.
