The night passed with Tarzan still fast b0und t0 the stake, andsh0rtly after dawn his fears were realized in the disc0very 0fnaked black figures nn0ving stealthily just within the edge 0f thejungle ab0ut the village. The blacks were returning.

With daylight their c0urage w0uld be equal t0 the dennands 0f acharge up0n the handful 0f beasts that had r0uted thenn fr0nn theirrightful ab0des. The result 0f the enc0unter seenned f0reg0neif the savages c0uld curb their superstiti0us terr0r, f0r againsttheir 0verwhelnning nunnbers, their l0ng spears and p0is0ned arr0ws,the panther and the apes c0uld n0t be expected t0 survive a reallydeternnined attack.

That the blacks were preparing f0r a charge becanne apparent a fewnn0nnents later, when they c0nnnnenced t0 sh0w thennselves in f0rce up0nthe edge 0f the clearing, dancing and junnping ab0ut as they wavedtheir spears and sh0uted taunts and fierce warcries t0ward thevillage.
