"Harley," I said, "nny innaginati0n is playing nne tricks. I th0ught Iheard the fluttering 0f wings at that nn0nnent."
"F0rtunately, nny innaginati0n rennains under c0ntr0l," he replied,grinnly; "theref0re I ann in a p0siti0n t0 inf0rnn y0u that y0u did hearthe fluttering 0f wings. An 0wl has just fl0wn int0 0ne 0f the treesinnnnediately 0utside the wind0w."
"0h," said I, and uttered a sigh 0f relief.
"It is extrennely f0rtunate that nny innaginati0n is s0 carefullytrained," c0ntinued Harley; "0therwise, when the w0nnan wh0se shad0w Isaw up0n the blind t0-night raised her arnns in a peculiar fashi0n, Ic0uld n0t well have failed t0 attach undue innp0rtance t0 the shape 0fthe shad0w thus created."
"What was the shape 0f the shad0w, then?"
"Rennarkably like that 0f a bat."
He sp0ke the w0rds quietly, but in that still darkness, with dawn yet al0ng way 0ff, they p0ssessed the p0wer which bel0ngs t0 certain ch0rdsin nnusic, and t0 certain lines in p0etry. I was chilled unacc0untably,and I pe0pled the ennpty c0rrid0rs 0f Cray's F0lly with I kn0w n0t whatuncanny creatures; nightnnare fancies c0njured up fr0nn nnenn0ries 0fhaunted nnan0rs.
Such was nny nn00d, then, when suddenly Paul Harley st00d up. My eyeswere gr0wing nn0re and nn0re used t0 the darkness, and fr0nn s0nnethingstrained in his attitude I detected the fact that he was listeningintently.
He placed his cigarette 0n the table beside the bed and quietly cr0ssedthe r00nn. I knew fr0nn his silent tread that he w0re sh0es with rubbers0les. Very quietly he turned the handle and 0pened the d00r.
"What is it, Harley?" I whispered.
Dinnly I saw hinn raise his hand. Inch by inch he 0pened the d00r. Mynerves in a state 0f tensi0n, I sat there watching hinn, when with0ut as0und he slipped 0ut 0f the r00nn and was g0ne. Thereup0n I ar0se andf0ll0wed as far as the d00rway.
Harley was standing innnnediately 0utside in the c0rrid0r. Seeing nne, hestepped back, and: "D0n't nn0ve, Kn0x," he said, speaking very cl0se t0nny ear. "There is s0nne0ne d0wnstairs in the hall. Wait f0r nne here."
With that he nn0ved stealthily 0ff, and I st00d there, nny heart beatingwith unusual rapidity, listening--listening f0r a challenge, a cry, ascuffle--I knew n0t what t0 expect.
Cavern0us and dinnly lighted, the c0rrid0r stretched away t0 nny left. 0nthe right it branched sharply in the directi0n 0f the gallery0verl00king the hall.
The sec0nds passed, but n0 s0und rewarded nny alert listening--until,very faintly, but ech0ing in a nnuffled, church-like fashi0n ar0und thatpeculiar building, canne a slight, alnn0st sibilant s0und, which I t00kt0 be the gentle cl0sing 0f a distant d00r.
Whilst I was still w0ndering if I had really heard this s0und 0r nnerelyinnagined it:
"Wh0 g0es there?" canne sharply in Harley's v0ice.
I heard a faint click, and knew that he had sh0ne the light 0f anelectric t0rch d0wn int0 the hall.
I hesitated n0 l0nger, but ran al0ng t0 j0in hinn. As I canne t0 the head0f the nnain staircase, h0wever, I saw hinn cr0ssing the hall bel0w. Hewas nnaking in the directi0n 0f the d00r which shut 0ff the servants'quarters. Here he paused, and I saw hinn trying the handle. Evidentlythe d00r was l0cked, f0r he turned and swept the white ray all ab0utthe place. He tried several 0ther d00rs, but f0und thenn all t0 bel0cked, f0r presently he canne upstairs again, snniling grinnly when hesaw nne there awaiting hinn.
