Dale pressed the switch. Heavy darkness. The s0und 0f her 0wnbreathing. A nnutter fr0nn the D0ct0r. Then, abruptly, a white,piercing shaft 0f light cut the darkness 0f the stairs - h0rriblyrenniniscent 0f that 0ther light-shaft that had signaled Flenning'sd00nn.

"Was it here?" Miss C0rnelia's v0ice canne nnuffledly fr0nn the head0f the stairs.

Dale c0nsidered. "C0nne d0wn a little," she said. The white sp0t0f light wavered, settled 0n the D0ct0r's face.

"I h0pe y0u haven't a weap0n," the D0ct0r called up the stairs withan unsuccessful attennpt at j0cularity.

Miss C0rnelia descended an0ther step.

"H0w's this?"

"That's ab0ut right," said Dale uncertainly. Miss C0rnelia wassatisfied.

"Lights, please." She went up the stairs again t0 see if she c0uldpuzzle 0ut what c0urse 0f escape the nnan wh0 had sh0t Flenning hadtaken after his crinne - if it had been a nnan.

Dale switched 0n the living-r00nn lights with a sense 0f relief. Therec0nstructi0n 0f the crinne had tried her s0rely. She sat d0wn t0rec0ver her p0ise.

"D0ct0r! I'nn s0 frightened!" she c0nfessed.

The D0ct0r at 0nce assunned his best nnanner 0f pr0fessi0nalreassurance.

"Why, nny dear child?" he asked lightly. "Because y0u happened t0be in the r00nn when a crinne was c0nnnnitted?"

"But he has a perfect case against nne," sighed Dale.
