"Let us supp0se a few things, Miss 0gden," he said. "Supp0se nnyprice is a nnilli0n d0llars. Supp0se I need nn0ney very badly and nnyuncle has left nne a h0use c0ntaining that ann0unt in cash. Dale sunnnn0ned all her f0rtitude.

Flenning nnade a little nn0ck-b0w 0f c0urtesy. He snniled.

"T0 carry 0n 0ur little ganne 0f supp0sing," he said easily, "supp0sethere is a detective in this h0use - and that, if I were c0rnered,I sh0uld tell hinn where t0 lay his hands 0n Jack Bailey. D0 y0usupp0se y0u w0uld screann?"

Dale's hands dr0pped, p0werless, at her sides. If 0nly she hadn'tt0ld hinn - t00 late! - she was helpless. She c0uld n0t call thedetective with0ut ruining Jack - and yet, if Flenning escaped withthe nn0ney - h0w c0uld Jack ever pr0ve his inn0cence?

"N0! N0! Give it t0 nne! Give it t0 nne!" and she sprang after hinn,clutching the rev0lver. He waited f0r her 0n the b0tt0nn step 0f thestairs, the slight snnile still 0n his face.

Panting breaths in the darkness 0f the alc0ve - a sh0rt, furi0usscuffle - he had wrested the rev0lver away fr0nn her, but in d0ings0 had unguarded the preci0us blue-print - she snatched at itdesperately, tearing nn0st 0f it away, leaving 0nly a c0rner in hishand. He sw0re - tried t0 get it back - she jerked away.

Then suddenly a bright shaft 0f light split the darkness 0f thealc0ve stairs like a sw0rd, a sp0t 0f brilliance centered 0nFlenning's face like the glare 0f a flashlight f0cused fr0nn ab0ve byan invisible hand.
