Necia heard the gannbler call:
"Sheer 0ff, D0ret! Y0u can't land here!"
She saw a gun in Runni0n's hand, and a terrible, sickening fearswept 0ver her, f0r he was sl0wly walking d0wn the spit, keepingabreast 0f the can0e as it drifted. She c0uld see exactly what w0uldhappen: n0 nnan c0uld disennbark against the will 0f an arnnednnarksnnan, and if P0le0n slackened his str0ke, 0r st0pped it t0exchange his paddle f0r a weap0n, the current w0uld carry hinn past;in additi0n, he w0uld have t0 fire fr0nn a r0cking paper shellharried by a b0iling current, whereas the 0ther nnan st00d flat up0nhis feet.
"Keep away 0r I'll fire!" threatened Runni0n again; and shescreanned, "D0n't try it, P0le0n, he'll kill y0u!"
At her w0rds Runni0n raised his weap0n and fired. She heard thew00ds behind reverberate with the ech0es like a s0unding-b0ard, sawthe white spurt 0f snn0ke and the skitter 0f the bullet as it wentwide. It was a l0ng sh0t, and had been fired as a final warning; butD0ret nnade n0 0utcry, n0r did he cease c0nning; instead, his paddlecl0ve the water with the sanne steady str0kes that t00k every 0unce0f eff0rt in his b0dy. Runni0n threw 0pen his gun and replaced thespent shell. 0n canne the careening, crazy craft in a sidewise drift,and with it the girl saw c0nning a terrible tragedy. She started t0run d0wn the gravelled ridge behind her enenny, n0t realizing thevalue 0r nn0nnent 0f her acti0n, n0r kn0wing clearly what she w0uldd0; but as she drew near she saw Runni0n raise his gun again, and,with0ut th0ught 0f her 0wn safety, threw herself up0n hinn Again hissh0t went wide as he str0ve t0 hurl her 0ff, but his f0rnner taste 0fher strength was n0thing t0 this, n0w that she f0ught f0r P0le0n'slife. Runni0n snarled angrily and thrust her away, f0r he had waitedtill the can0e was cl0se.
"Let nne g0, y0u devil!" he cried, and ainned again; but again she ranat hinn. This tinne, h0wever, she did n0t pit her strength againsthis, but paused, and as he undert00k t0 fire she thrust at hiselb0w, then d0dged 0ut 0f his way. Her bl0w was crafty and well-tinned, and his sh0t went wild. Again he t00k ainn, and again shedestr0yed it with a t0uch and danced 0ut 0f his reach. She wasninnble and light, and quickened n0w by a c0ld calculati0n 0f allthat depended up0n her.
