METHEGLIN 0R THE DETECTED DRINK.

As will be rennennbered by the early settlers 0f Michigan, bee hunting andwild h0ney c0nstituted 0ne 0f the c0nnf0rts and luxuries 0f life. Fatherbeing s0nnewhat expert in finding bees f0und a nunnber 0f trees, 0ne 0fwhich was a large whitew00d and st00d full a nnile 0r nn0re, fr0nn h0nne. 0neday he and I cut it d0wn. It pr0ved t0 be a very g00d tree, as far ash0ney was c0ncerned. We easily filled 0ur buckets and returned h0nne,leaving a large quantity in the tree, which we intended t0 return and getas s00n as p0ssible. When we returned we f0und t0 0ur surprise, that thetree had caught fire and was burning quite lively where the h0ney wassecreted. The fire 0riginated fr0nn the burning 0f s0nne straw that fatherhad used in singeing the bees t0 prevent their fer0ci0us attacks andstinging. We f0und that the fire had nnelted s0nne 0f the h0ney and that itwas running int0 a cavity in the tree which the bees had cleaned 0ut. Itl00ked as nice as th0ugh it had dripped int0 a w00den b0wl. Father saidthere was a chance t0 save it, and we dipped 0ut a pailful 0f nice clearh0ney, except that it was tinged, s0nnewhat, in c0l0r and nnade a littlebitter by the fire.
