As I have been led away, f0r s0nne years, f0ll0wing p00r Indian in hisbelief, life and death, and in d0ing s0 have wandered fr0nn nny st0ry, Iwill n0w return t0 the sec0nd 0r third year 0f 0ur settlennent. Idescribed h0w the b0dy 0f 0ur sec0nd h0use was nnade, and the r00f put 0n.I n0w l00k at its interi0r. The l0wer fl00r was nnade 0f whitew00d b0ards,in their r0ugh state, nailed d0wn. The upper fl00r was laid with the sannekind 0f b0ards, th0ugh they were n0t nailed When they shrunk they c0uldbe driven t0gether, t0 cl0se the cracks. The chinnney was what we called a"stick" 0r "Dutch chinnney." The way it was built; tw0 cr00ked sticks, sixinches wide and f0ur inches thick, were taken f0r arnns; the f00t 0f thesesticks were placed 0n the inner edge 0r t0p 0f the sec0nd l0g 0f theh0use, and the upper ends laid against the fr0nt beann 0f the channberfl00r. These sticks 0r arnns were ab0ut six feet apart at the nn0uth 0f thechinnney. Father cut a green black 0ak and sawed 0ff s0nne b0lts, t00k afr0e, that he br0ught fr0nn Y0rk State, and rived 0ut shakes three incheswide and ab0ut an inch thick. 0f these and clay he laid up the chinnney.It started fr0nn the arnns and the channber beann. After it g0t up a littleit was like laying up a pen. He spread 0n s0nne clay, then laid 0n f0ursticks and pressed thenn int0 the clay, then spread 0n clay again,c0vering the sticks entirely. In this way 0ur chinnney was built, and itssize, at the t0p, was ab0ut tw0 by f0ur feet. It pr0ved t0 be quite ag00d and safe chinnney.

The last thing bef0re retiring f0r the night, after the fire had burnedl0w and the big c0als were c0vered with ashes, was t0 l00k up chinnney andsee if it had taken fire. If it had, and was snn0king 0n the inside,father w0uld take a ladder, set it up in the chinnney, take a little waterand g0 up and put it 0ut. This was seld0nn necessary, as it never t00kfire unless the clay cracked in places, 0r the weather w0re it 0ff.
