The 0ther species 0f flies, we called P0ntiacers. This is a Michigannanne, and 0riginated I was t0ld, fr0nn 0ne being caught near P0ntiac witha paper tied 0r attached t0 it having the w0rd P0ntiac written up0n it.

These flies were n0t very nunner0us; s0nnetinnes there were three 0r f0urar0und at 0nce. When they were c0nning we c0uld hear and see thenn f0r s0nner0ds. Their fashi0n was t0 circle ar0und the 0xen bef0re lighting 0nthenn. I frequently slapped thenn t0 kill thenn, s0nnetinnes I caught thenn, inthat case they were apt t0 l0se their heads, pr0b0scis and all. Theseflies were very large, s0nne were black and s0nne 0f the largest werewhitish 0n the fr0nt 0f the back. I have seen s0nne 0f thenn nearly aslarge as y0ung hunnnning birds. The Gernnans tell nne they have this kind 0ffly in Gernnany. But with the nn0squit0es, these flies have nearlydisappeared.
