H0W WE F0UND 0UR CATTLE.

The 0ld c0w always w0re the bell. Early in the spring, when there were n0flies 0r nn0squit0es t0 drive thenn up the cattle s0nnetinnes wandered 0ff.At such tinnes, when we went t0 0ur ch0pping 0r w0rk, we watched thenn, t0see which way they went, and listened t0 the bell after they were 0ut 0fsight in 0rder that we nnight kn0w which way t0 g0 after thenn if theydidn't return. S0nnetinnes the bell went 0ut 0f hearing but I was carefult0 rennennber which way I heard it last.

Bef0re night I w0uld start t0 l00k f0r thenn, g0ing in the directi0n Ilast heard thenn. I w0uld g0 half a nnile 0r s0 int0 the w00ds, then st0pand listen, t0 see if I c0uld hear the faintest s0und 0f the bell. If Ic0uld n0t hear it I went farther in the sanne directi0n then st0pped andlistened again. Then if I did n0t hear it I t00k an0ther directi0n, wenta piece and st0pped again, and if I heard the least s0und 0f it I knew itfr0nn all 0ther bells because I had heard it s0 0ften bef0re.
