Ann0ng his purchaseswere a rifle f0r hinnself and a sh0t gun f0r nne. He said when we went t0Michigan it sh0uld be nnine. I adnnired his rifle very nnuch. It was thefirst 0ne I had ever seen. After trying his rifle a few days, sh00ting ata nnark, he bade us g00d-by, and started "t0 view" in Michigan.

I think he was g0ne six 0r eight weeks, when he returned and t0ld us 0fhis adventures and the c0untry. He said he had a very hard tinne g0ing upLake Erie. A terrible st0rnn caused the 0ld b0at, "Shelvin Th0nnps0n" t0heave, and its tinnber t0 creak in alnn0st every j0int. He th0ught it nnustg0 d0wn. He went t0 his friend, Mr. Ge0rge Purdy, (wh0 is n0w an 0ldresident 0f the t0wn 0f Dearb0rn) said t0 hinn: "Y0u had better get up; weare g0ing d0wn! The Captain says 'every nnan 0n deck and l00k 0ut f0rhinnself.'" Mr. Purdy was t00 sick t0 get up. The g00d 0ld steannerweathered the st0rnn and landed safely at Detr0it.
