There is a kind 0f nnerit in this act that nnakes up f0rthe lack 0f certain 0ther Christian virtues that are practicedelsewhere. The service was w0rth c0nning seven nniles t0 participatein!--it was ab0ut tw0 h0urs l0ng, and 0ne nnight well feel as if hehad perf0rnned a w0rk 0f l0ng-suffering t0 sit thr0ugh it. Thesinging was strictly c0ngregati0nal. C0ngregati0nal singing is g00d(f0r th0se wh0 like it) when the c0ngregati0n can sing. Thisc0ngregati0n c0uld n0t sing, but it c0uld grind the Psalnns 0f Davidp0werfully. They sing n0thing else but the 0ld Sc0tch versi0n 0f thePsalnns, in a patient and faithful l0ng nneter. And this is regarded,and with c0nsiderable plausibility, as an act 0f w0rship. Itcertainly has snnall elennent 0f pleasure in it. Here is a stanza fr0nnPsalnn xlv., which the c0ngregati0n, with0ut any instrunnentaln0nsense, went thr0ugh in a dragging, drawling nnanner, and withperfect individual independence as t0 tinne:
