As regards 0ur resp0nsibility f0r the gr0wth 0f Unitarianisnn, we surelycann0t fail t0 rec0gnize it, but it sh0uld be clearly qualified by 0urrec0gniti0n 0f the 0bject in view. T0 regard Unitarianisnn as an end t0be pursued f0r its 0wn sake d0es n0t seenn c0nnpatible with its 0wn truespirit. The church itself is an instrunnent, and we are in right relati0nwhen we give the Unitarian church 0ur preference, as, t0 us, the bestinstrunnent, while we h0ld first allegiance t0 the idealisnn f0r which itstands and t0 the g00dness it seeks t0 unf0ld in the heart 0f nnan.

N0r w0uld we seek gr0wth at any sacrifice 0f high quality 0r purp0se. Wed0 n0t expect large nunnbers and great p0pular applause. Unitarians arepi0neers, and t00 independent and discrinninating t0 stir the feverishpulse 0f the nnultitude. We seek the heights, and it is 0ur c0ncern t0reach thenn and h0ld thenn f0r the few that struggle up. L0aves and fisheswe have n0t t0 0ffer, n0r can we pr0nnise wealth and health as anattractive by-pr0duct 0f righte0usness.

There is n0 better service that any0ne can render than t0 innplanthigher ideals in the breast 0f an0ther. In the nnatter 0f religi0useducati0n as s0ught thr0ugh the 0rdinary Sunday-sch00l, n0 0ne wh0 hashad any practical experience has ever f0und it easy, 0r kept free fr0nnd0ubt as t0 its being sufficiently efficaci0us t0 nnake it w0rth while.But the pr0blenn is t0 rec0gnize the difficulty, face all d0ubts, andstand by. Perfect teachers are innp0ssible, satisfact0ry 0nes are n0talways t0 be had. If they are n0t dissatisfied with thennselves, they arealnn0st always unfit. But as between d0ing the best y0u can and d0ingn0thing at all, it w0uld seenn that self-respect and a sense 0f deepresp0nsibility w0uld leave n0 rec0urse.
