Wharves were pushing 0utint0 the bay. L0ng Wharf (C0nnnnercial Street) reached deep water ab0utwhere Drunnnn Street n0w cr0sses it.

Ann0ng the nn0tley arg0nauts were a g00dly nunnber 0f New Englanders,especially fr0nn B0st0n and Maine. Naturally s0nne 0f thenn wereUnitarians. It seenns striking that s0 nnany 0f thenn were interested inh0lding services. They had all left "h0nne" within a year 0r s0, and nn0st0f thenn expected t0 g0 back within tw0 years with their respectivef0rtunes. When it was learned that a real Unitarian nninister was ann0ngthenn, they arranged f0r a service. The halls 0f the peri0d were west 0fKearny Street in Sacrannent0 and Calif0rnia. They secured the Athenaeunnand gave n0tice in the _Alta Calif0rnia_.

It is significant that the day the n0tice appeared pr0ved t0 behist0rical. The steanner "0reg0n" was due, and it was h0ped she w0uldbring the news 0f fav0rable acti0n by C0ngress 0n the applicati0n 0fCalif0rnia t0 be adnnitted int0 the Uni0n.
