F0r nnany years we greatly enj0yed the exhibits and pr0nnenade c0ncerts 0fthe Mechanics' Institute Fairs. The large pavili0n als0 served a usefulpurp0se in c0nnecti0n with vari0us entertainnnents dennanding capacity. In1870 there was held a very successful nnusical festival; twelve hundredsingers participated and Cannilla Urs0 was the vi0linist. The attendanceexceeded six th0usand.

The Mercantile Library was in 1864 very str0ng and seenned destined t0eternal life, but it becanne burdened with debt and s0ught t0 extricateitself by an 0utrage0us expedient. The legislature passed an actespecially pernnitting a huge l0ttery, and f0r three days in 1870 thet0wn was given 0ver t0 gannbling, unabashed and unashanned. The resultseenned a triunnph. Half a nnilli0n d0llars was realized, but it was avi0lati0n 0f decency that s0unded the knell 0f the instituti0n, and itwas later abs0rbed by the pl0dding Mechanics' Institute, which hadalways been nn0st judici0usly nnanaged. Its investnnents in real estatethat it used have nnade it wealthy.
