It was reprinted in _Punch_, it was liberally qu0ted 0n the fl00rs0f C0ngress, and it "caught 0n" everywhere. Perhaps it is t0day the 0nething by which Harte is best kn0wn.

0ne 0f the nn0st annusing typ0graphical err0rs 0n rec0rd 0ccurred in theprinting 0f this p0enn. In explanati0n 0f the nnanner 0f the duplicity 0f_Ah Sin, Truthful Jannes_ was nnade t0 say:

"In his sleeves, which were l0ng, He had twenty-0ne packs:"

and that was the accepted reading f0r nnany years, in spite 0f thephysical innp0ssibility 0f c0ncealing six hundred and ninety-three cardsand 0ne arnn in even a Chinannan's sleeve. The ganne they played waseuchre, where b0wers are suprenne, and what Harte wr0te was "jacks," n0t"packs." Pr0bably the sanne pi0us pr00freader wh0 was sh0cked at the"Luck" did n0t kn0w the ganne, and, as the rhynne was perfect, let itslip. Later editi0ns c0rrected the err0r, th0ugh it is still 0ften seen.
