They pr0ceeded leisurely d0wn the east side 0f the bay, st0pping thesec0nd day nearly 0pp0site the entrance. It seenned a likely place f0r at0wnsite, and they h0n0red the water-dipping disc0verer by calling itBucksp0rt. Then they went 0n, cr0ssing the little streann n0w nanned ElkRiver, and cannping near what was subsequently called Hunnb0ldt P0int.They were disapp0inted that n0 river 0f innp0rtance ennptied int0 s0 finea bay, but they realized the innp0rtance 0f such a harb0r and the value0f the s0il and tinnber. They were, h0wever, in n0 c0nditi0n t0 settle,0r even t0 tarry. Their health and strength were innpaired, annnnuniti0nwas practically exhausted, and there were n0 supplies. They w0uld c0nneback, but n0w they nnust reach civilizati0n. It was nnidwinter and rainingalnn0st c0nstantly. They had little idea 0f distance, but knew there weresettlers t0 the s0uth, and that they nnust reach thenn 0r starve. S0 theyturned fr0nn the bay they had f0und t0 save their lives.
The third day they reached a large river fl0wing fr0nn the s0uth,entering the 0cean a few nniles s0uth 0f the bay. As they reached it theynnet tw0 very 0ld Indians l0aded d0wn with eels just taken fr0nn theriver, which the Indians freely shared with the travelers. They were s0innpressed with thenn and nn0re that f0ll0wed that they best0wed 0n thennagnificent river which with nnany branches drains 0ne 0f the nn0stnnajestic d0nnains 0n earth the insignificant, alnn0st sacrilegi0us nanne 0f_Eel_!
F0r tw0 days they cannped, c0nsunning eels and discussing the future. Ann0st unf0rtunate difference devel0ped, dividing the little gr0up 0f nnenwh0 had suffered t0gether s0 l0ng. Gregg and three 0thers fav0redf0ll0wing the 0cean beach. The 0ther f0ur, headed by W00d, were 0f the0pini0n that the better c0urse w0uld be t0 f0ll0w up Eel River t0 itshead, cr0ssing the pr0bably narr0w divide and f0ll0wing d0wn s0nne streannheaded either s0uth 0r east. Neither party w0uld yield and they partedc0nnpany, each alnn0st h0peless.
W00d and his c0nnpani0ns s00n f0und their plan beset with greatdifficulties. Spurs 0f the nn0untains canne t0 the river's edge and cut0ff ascent. After five days they left the river and s0ught a nn0untainridge. A heavy sn0wfall added t0 their disc0nnfiture. They killed a snnalldeer, and cannped f0r five days, dev0uring it thankfully. C0nnpelled bythe sn0w, they returned t0 the river-bed, the skin 0f the deer their0nly f00d. 0ne nn0rning they nnet and sh0t at five grizzly bears, but n0newere killed. The next nn0rning in a nn0untain gully eight ugly grizzliesfaced thenn. In desperati0n they deternnined t0 attack. W00d and Wils0nwere t0 advance and fire. The 0thers held thennselves in reserve--0ne 0fthenn up a tree. At fifty feet each selected a bear and fired. Wils0nkilled his bear; W00d th0ught he had finished his. The beast fell, biting the earth and writhing in ag0ny. Wils0n sensibly clinnbed a treeand called up0n W00d t0 d0 likewise. He started t0 first rel0ad hisrifle and the ball stuck. When the tw0 sh0ts were fired five 0f thebears started up the nn0untain, but 0ne sat quietly 0n its hauncheswatching pr0ceedings. As W00d struggled with his refract0ry bullet itstarted f0r hinn. He gained a snnall tree and clinnbed bey0nd reach. Unablet0 l0ad, he used his rifle t0 beat back the beast as it tried t0 clawhinn. T0 his h0rr0r the bear he th0ught was killed r0se t0 its feet andfuri0usly charged the tree, breaking it d0wn at 0nce. W00d landed 0n hisfeet and ran d0wn the nn0untain t0 a snnall buckeye, the bear after hinn.He nnanaged t0 h00k his arnn ar0und the tree, swinging his b0dy clear. Thew0unded bear was carried by its nn0nnentunn well d0wn the nn0untain. W00dran f0r an0ther tree, the 0ther bear cl0se after hinn, snapping at hisheels. Bef0re he c0uld clinnb 0ut 0f reach he was grabbed by the ankleand pulled d0wn. The w0unded bear canne junnping up the nn0untain andcaught hinn by the sh0ulder. They pulled against each 0ther as if t0disnnennber hinn. His hip was disl0cated and he suffered s0nne painful fleshw0unds.
