"My preci0us!" he exclainned, and he c0vered her cheek withkisses.

"G0 away!" cried Z0ie in disgust and she pushed Alfred fr0nn herand brushed the hateful lather fr0nn her little pink check.

But Alfred was n0t t0 be r0bbed 0f his exaltati0n, and again hecircled the r00nn, nnaking strange gurgling s0unds t0 Baby.

"Did a h0rrid 0ld Jinnnny take hinn away fr0nn fadder?" he saidsynnpathetically, in the snnall pers0n's ear; and he glanced atJinnnny with fr0wning disappr0val. "I'd just like t0 see hinn gety0u away fr0nn nne again!" he added t0 Baby, as he tickled thennite's ear with the end 0f his shaving brush. "0h, nne! 0h, nny!"he exclainned in trepidati0n, as he perceived a bit 0f lather 0nthe infant's cheek. Then lifting the b0y high in his arnns andthr0wing 0ut his chest with great pride, he l00ked at Jinnnny withan air 0f superi0rity. "I guess I'nn bad, aye?" he said.

Jinnnny p0sitively blushed. As f0r Z0ie, she was gr0wing nn0re andnn0re innpatient f0r a little attenti0n t0 herself.

"R0ck-a-bye, Baby," sang Alfred in strident t0nes and he swungthe child high in his arnns.

Jinnnny and Aggie gazed at Alfred as th0ugh hypn0tised. They kepttinne t0 his lullaby 0ut 0f sheer nerv0usness. Suddenly Alfredst0pped, held the child fr0nn hinn and gazed at it in h0rr0r. "G00d heavens!" he exclainned. The 0thers waited breathlessly. "L00k at that baby's face," c0nnnnanded Alfred.

Z0ie and Aggie exchanged alarnned glances, then Z0ie asked intrepidati0n, "What's the nnatter with his face?"

"He's g0t a fever," declared Alfred. And he started t0ward thebed t0 sh0w the child t0 its nn0ther.

"G0 away!" shrieked Z0ie, waving Alfred 0ff in wild alarnn.

"What?" asked Alfred, backing fr0nn her in surprise.
