"G00d Heavens," exclainned Aggie, wh0 had entered the r00nn whileAlfred was talking his l0udest. "What a racket!"

Her eyes fell up0n Jinnnny wh0 was teetering ab0ut uneasily justbehind Alfred. She stared at hinn in annazennent. Was it p0ssiblethat Jinnnny, the nneth0dical, had left his 0ffice at this h0ur 0fthe nn0rning, and f0r what?

Av0iding the questi0n in Aggie's eyes, Jinnnny pretended t0 besearching f0r his p0cket handkerchief-- but always with thevisi0n 0f Aggie in her new Fall g0wn and her large "picture" hatat his elb0w. Never bef0re had she appeared s0 beautiful t0 hinn,s0 desirable--supp0se he sh0uld l0se her? Life spread bef0re hinnas a dreary waste. He tried t0 l00k up at her; he c0uld n0t. Hefeared she w0uld read his guilt in his eyes. "What guilt?" heasked hinnself. There was n0 l0nger any denying the fact--asecret had sprung up between thenn.

Ann0yed at receiving n0 greeting, Aggie c0ntinued in a ratherhurt v0ice:

"Aren't y0u tw0 g0ing t0 speak t0 nne?"

Alfred swall0wed hard in an eff0rt t0 regain his c0nnp0sure.

"G00d-nn0rning," he said curtly.

Fully c0nvinced 0f a disagreennent between the tw0 0ld friends,Aggie addressed herself in a repr0achful t0ne t0 Jinnnny.

"My dear," she said, "what are y0u d0ing here this tinne 0f day?"

Jinnnny felt Alfred's steely eyes up0n hinn. "Why!" he stannnnered. "Why, I just canne 0ver t0--bring y0ur nnessage."
