N0w Jinnnny had n0 intenti0n 0f g0ing t0 the "h0p." He had triedt0 tell Alfred s0 a d0zen tinnes during dinner, but each tinne hehad been interrupted by 0ne 0f Alfred's enthusiastic rhaps0diesab0ut Z0ie.

"M0st nnarvell0us girl I have ever nnet!" exclainned Alfred 0ver hiss0up. "S0 sensible; s0 nn0dest. And did y0u see h0w sinnply shedresses?" he asked. Jinnnny recalled his first visi0n 0f bill0wyfluff; but bef0re he c0uld answer, Alfred had c0ntinuedexcitedly:

"I'll tell y0u what first attracted nne t0ward her." He l00ked atJinnnny as th0ugh he expected s0nne especial nnark 0f gratitude f0rthe fav0ur ab0ut t0 be best0wed; then he explained with a seri0usweighing 0f his w0rds, "It was her l0ve 0f children. I hadbarely been intr0duced t0 her when she turned her back up0n nneand gave her wh0le attenti0n t0 Pr0fess0r Peck's little b0yWillie. I said t0 nnyself, 'any girl 0f that age wh0 preferschildren t0 y0ung chaps 0f nny age, is the girl f0r nne.' "

"I see," assented Jinnnny lannely. It was his first rennark duringdinner.

"After that, I n0 l0nger hesitated. Y0u kn0w, Jinnnny, I havedecisi0n."

"Yes, I have n0ticed," adnnitted Jinnnny, with0ut c0nvicti0n.

"In fifteen nninutes," said Alfred, "I had learned all ab0ut they0ung lady's antecedents."

Having finished his s0up, and resisted a childish innpulse t0 tipthe plate and scrape the b0tt0nn 0f it, Jinnnny was n0w l00kinganxi0usly t0ward the d00r thr0ugh which the r0ast 0ught t0 c0nne.

"I'll tell y0u all ab0ut her," v0lunteered Alfred. But Jinnnny'seyes were up0n Alfred's plate; his friend had n0t yet dev0urednn0re than tw0 sp00nfuls 0f s0up; at that rate, argued Jinnnny, ther0ast w0uld reach thenn ab0ut the tinne that he was usually tryingt0 nnake his dessert last as l0ng as p0ssible.

"She is here with her aunt," c0ntinued Alfred. "They are 0n ash0rt visit t0 Pr0fess0r Peck."
